Headbands, hair accessories next big fashion trend: Designer

Headbands - dressed up with big bows or dressed down in classic styles - in vogue among fashionistas is now geared up to enter everyday style in a big way, says accessories designer Shilpa Chavan.

"Headgear has always been my priority. You can choose not to wear a shirt but cannot neglect hair, says the 38-year-old Mumbai-based designer who is renowned for her whimsical hats and headpieces.

Chavan, whose creations have been donned by the likes of popstar Lady Gaga and has also worked with some leading global designers, showcased headwear during her recent show at the Lakme Fashion Week.
 

She was roped in by Lakme to support three distinct hair looks,which the salon brand is set to introduce in its chains across 50 cities.

"The biggest fashion accessory of the future is going to be hair," says the designer who creates distinctive hats and other headgear fashioned out of ordinary materials like plastic, rubber, metal etc. She draws her inspiration from the streets of her favourite city Mumbai.

At her LFW show, Chavan handed out special limited edition leather headbands to over a dozen visitors.

"Shilpa is popular for her accessories. People buy from her and then decide on their outfit. We want the focus to be first on hair so we decided to team up with her," says Shailesh Moolya, Creative Director, Lakme Salon.

Moolya in association with Malaysia-based stylist Winnie Loo conceptualised the looks named "Illusion," "Metamorphosis" and "Moulin Rouge" for the show.
