The headman of a remote village in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district was arrested for denying a family to conduct the funeral rites of a young woman who died in the village, police said today.

"Following an FIR lodged by the mother of the deceased we arrested headman of Mawjongka village Sken Shabong yesterday," SP (City) Vivek Syiem said.

A local court remanded him to three days police custody today.

The village headman had warned the family not to bury the body of the 19-year-old girl within the village as he was not informed about her death, according to the FIR.

The girl died at Mawjongka village on June 5 and her funeral was held on June 7 in the village itself.
