Union Health Ministry has asked AIIMS to investigate "appropriately" a matter involving "leakage" of information to a particular media organisation after the premier institue requested for a probe by Intelligence Bureau in the case.

The ministry in its letter dated January 7 asked All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to conduct its own probe.

"The matter has been considered in the ministry. The institute is requested to investigate the matter appropriately. This issues with the approval of Health and Family Welfare Ministry," it said in its letter to the Director of AIIMS.

Health Ministry sources said that this was an internal matter of the AIIMS and there is no possibility of referring the matter to the IB.

Apparently, AIIMS Deputy Director (Administration) had written to the ministry seeking an IB investigation into "leakage" of official documents from AIIMS to a media organisation for identifying the unnamed "source" from the institute.

The media organisation had published several reports on alleged irregularities at AIIMS based on that information.
