Temperature in parts of North India breached 40 degree Celsius mark today as the region witnessed "unexpected" heat and humidity during this part of the season.
It was a hot and humid day for Delhiites as mercury soared to 37.7 degrees, four notches above the normal level.
The minimum temperature was recorded at 24.2 degrees, which was two notches above normal, an official of the Meteorological department said.
Humidity oscillated between 87 to 34 per cent.
In Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow and Varanasi recorded a similar 34 degree.
Rajasthan also bore the brunt of heat wave with Churu recording 40.5 degree, about four degree above normal.
Normal life was hit due to the inclement weather in the state.
Room coolers and ACs were still being used and the Met department has described it as "unexpected heat".
North-west parts of Rajasthan especially Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jodhpur, Gananganagar and Pilani recorded the maximum temperature above 39 degree C.
Jaipur recorded a maximum temperature of 38.9 degree, about four degree above normal.
In Punjab and Haryana, the maximum temperatures rose by a few notches above normal with Hisar recording maximum at 39.1 deg C, up by four degrees above normal.
Ambala and Bhiwani had maximums at 33.5 deg C and 37.8 deg C respectively.
The maximum temperatures of Amritsar and Patiala was 34.6 deg C and 34 deg C.
Chandigarh's maximum was 33.5 deg C.
