A severe to moderate heat wave prevailed over major parts in Bihar today as the scorching sun and hot wind kept people indoors.

Temperatures in the plains of northern and southern parts of Bihar hovered in the range of 43 degrees Celsius with Gaya recording the maximum temperature in the state at 43.5 degrees Celsius.

Patna followed with a maximum temperature of 42.6 degrees Celsius, Muzaffarpur 42 degrees, Purnia over 41 degrees and Bhagalpur 40.6 degrees.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that heat wave conditions would prevail in parts of Bihar tomorrow as well.

However, IMD Director Ashish Sen, based at the weather station in Patna, said north-eastern parts of the state could expect some relief by way of cloudy days tomorrow onwards. It will be followed by this kind of weather for entire Bihar.

"Northeastern parts of the state like Kishanganj, Araria and Purnia could witness cloudy weather tomorrow onwards. This weather may expand over entire Bihar and continue till the onset of monsoon here around June 11 to 13," said Sen.

IMD is forecasting thundershowers between May 26 and 30 over parts of East India, which includes Bihar. This is expected to provide immediate relief from heat wave conditions.
