Members from the opposition LDF and ruling UDF engaged themselves in heated exchanges in the Kerala Assembly today over the alleged roughing up of the convicts in T P Chandrasekharan murder case lodged in Viyyur central prison in Thrissur.

The issue was raised as a submission by K Radhakrishnan (CPI-M), who alleged that the convicts in the case were beaten up by the prison wardens in violation of rules and human rights.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, however, denied the charge and said it was the prisoners who actually misbehaved towards the prison Superintendent and other employees.

As the Minister stated this, LDF members protested and rushed to the well of the House. This sparked vehement protests from members from the treasury benches plunging the House in noisy scene for a while.

A delegation of CPI(M) leaders had visited the jail on Saturday following reports of maltreatment towards them.
