Heatwave conditions continued to affect districts in South Bengal, including the metropolis, with no relief in sight as the weatherman forecast similar conditions for the next two days.

"Heatwave conditions will continue for the next two days with the maximum temperature hovering around 40 degrees Celsius," regional Met director G C Debnath said.

The maximum temperature in the southern districts was recorded at Sriniketan in Birbhum district, with the mercury reaching 42.5 degrees Celsius, while most other places in southern and western districts experiencing heatwave condition.

It was a few notches lesser at 39.2 degrees in Kolkata, but the dry wind added to the discomfiture level.

Debnath said that there was almost no hope of rains in the next couple of days.

"The heatwave condition is likely to continue beyond that in the western districts of the state," he said.
