Heavy rain in Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining districts disrupted normal life as the crucial IPL playoff in the city had to be postponed by a day.

Incessant rains since yesterday brought down day temperature drastically in the metropolis as well as in most parts of Gangetic West Bengal, which were reeling under a severe form of heatwave till Sunday.

Though the rain, resulting from a low pressure, brought much-needed respite from the heatwave, it led to disappointment for lakhs of cricket fans owing to the postponement of an IPL playoff match between hosts Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab.

The rainfall in 24 hours till 5.30 PM was recorded at 30.7 mm in Kolkata, the Met office said.

The weather office has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places across Gangetic West Bengal and Bihar for tomorrow.

For Kolkata, the Met department has, however, predicted a few spells of light to moderate rain, thus keeping hopes alive for the IPL playoff match to be held on the reserve day tomorrow.

The well-marked low pressure area lay as a low pressure area over east Jharkhand adjoining Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha, the weather office said.

It would move nearly north-northeasterly direction and weaken gradually during next 48 hours, according to Meteorological data.

The maximum temperature in the metropolis stood at 27 degrees Celsius, which was eight degrees below normal.
