Heavy rains continued to pound several parts of Odisha today throwing normal life out of gear, even as more rainfall coupled with gusty wind was forecast till tomorrow.
Heavy downpour triggered by low pressure lashed different parts of the state for the past two days inundating low-lying areas in many places including the capital city of Bhubaneswar, official sources said.
While Phulbani town in Kandhamal district recorded 65 mm of rain fall since yesterday, seaside tourist destination of Gopalur in Ganjam district received 58 mm rainfall and western Odisha town of Sambalpur got 54.1 mm rains, the meteorological centre said in a bulletin.
The port town of Paradip recorded 45.3 mm and Bhubaneswar received 25.9 mm of rainfall, it added.
Vehicular movement was disrupted in several areas as rain water submerged many roads, including stretches of national highway near Bhubaneswar.
No respite from rains is expected till tomorrow.
Director of the met centre here Sarat Sahu said rain and thundershower would occur at most places over the state during the next 24 hours under the impact of a well marked low pressure area over the region.
Extremely heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places over south Odisha districts and heavy rainfall at one or two places over north Odisha districts during the next 24 hours, he said.
Gusty surface wind with speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph may prevail along and off Odisha coast, the met office said.
Sahu said fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in view of adverse weather conditions.
Though water level in some rivers including Mahanadi increased due to incessant rains, officials ruled out any threat of flood in the state.
