Heavy rains in Tehri district, three killed in wall collapse

Three members of a family were buried alive in the wee hours today when a wall collapsed following torrential rains in Uttarakhand's Tehri district even as the weather department forecast heavy rains in Kumaon region.

A woman, her daughter and son were killed in their sleep when the wall of their house in Purval village in Ghansali area of the district weakened by incessant showers caved in over them at around 4 AM, Tehri's District Magistrate Indudhar Baudai said.

Body of the deceased identified as 40-year-old Meena Devi, her 16-year-old daughter Sona and her 12-year-old son Sohan Lal have been recovered, he said.
 

Incessant rains have also inundated a stadium under construction in Tehri and the Zila Panchayat office.

Water level in the Tehri dam has touched 781 metre mark, prompting authorities to release 528 cusecs of water which may create flood-like situation in Rishikesh and Haridwar in the plains.

The MeT department here has issued a heavy rain alert for Almora, Nainital, Champawat and Pithioragarh districts of Kumaon region in the next 24 hours.

Deputy Secretary, Disaster Management, Santosh Badoni has sent and advisory to all district magistrates concerned to remain vigilant in view of the MeT department alert of heavy rains.
