At least 26 people were killed and over 100 others injured today due to heavy rains in Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said.

The heavy rains lashed provincial capital Peshawar and districts of Charsadda and Nowshera.

Provincial Minister Ziaullah Afridi said that 26 people were killed and more than 100 injured in rain related accidents.

Some private TV channels reported that more than 35 people were killed but it was not confirmed by the officials.

In Peshawar, the roofs of several houses collapsed due to the storm in Wahid Ghari, Charsadda road, Liaqat Abad, Sadiq Abad and Ring road areas.

The storm affected power supply system and rain water flooded the roads and streets, hampering rescue work.

The injured have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar and district headquarters hospitals Charsadda and Nowshera.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow and grief over loss of precious human lives and property due to torrential rains in the province and asked authorities to speed up the rescue work.
