The MeT department has forecast heavy rains tomorrow and extremely heavy rains from Tuesday in Gangetic West Bengal even as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said before leaving for London this morning that all precautionary measures have been taken.
The rainfalls will result owing to a depression over northeast Bay of Bengal which lay 60 km southeast of Patuakhali (Bangladesh) at 2.30 PM today, the MeT department said.
The system was likely to remain stationary but might turn into a deep depression during the next 48 hours, it added.
While heavy rains have been forecast tomorrow in Gangetic West Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy showers over Gangetic West Bengal on Tuesday and Wednesday, it said on its website.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said a task force has been formed to monitor the situation and district authorities and other state departments have been directed to be on the alert and stay prepared.
"Already some parts of North 24 Parganas district are waterlogged due to rains yesterday, but the administration is working round the clock with the local civic bodies. In the event of further heavy rainfall we are alert to cope with the situation," Banerjee told reporters at the city airport.
