Wearing helmets while riding two wheelers is basically more for the safety of vehicle users than anything else and this message should be conveyed to the people, a top police official said on Sunday.
Flagging off a motorcycle rally by a local unit of Indian Ex Servicemen League here, Puducherry Director General of Police Balaji Srivastava said, "the ex servicemen and others should tell people that more thanenforcement of rule on wearing of helmets it is basically the safety of the vehicle riders that is important."
He said a fatal accident might happen even within a short distance of 100 metres and hence personal safety counted more than enforcement of the rules governing the helmet wearing.
The DGP also said, "no rule can be enforced unless there is a sense of ownership and belonging to the purpose of the rule. Educating the people on importance of helmet wearing would be of effect instead of aspiring to enforce the rule on the matter.
