Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar is scheduled to launch 'Kartavya', a helpline for senior citizens, on August 15 here, a senior police official said today.

The services of the helpline can be availed by calling on the toll-free number- 1090.

"The 'Kartavya' helpline will be launched at the hands of former cricketer Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar on the coming Independence Day," Thane Joint Commissioner of Police Ashutosh Dumbre said here.

"In the wake of recent incidents of murders and assaults on senior citizens, coming up with this kind of helpline had become imperative. If any elderly person is being harassed or subjected to other crimes, then anybody can call the helpline and inform the police about it," Dumbre he said.

In times of crisis, senior citizens can use the helpline and police personnel will try to extend all possible help to them," he added.

A database of elderly people living in Thane is being compiled, Dhumbre said, adding that the helpline service would later be extended to other parts of Thane district, Dumbre said.
