Hemanthotsav opens

A five-day national tribal and

folk workshop and exhibition, 'Hemanthotsav' was inaugurated in the MGM College in Udupi last evening.

The event, an exhibition of art, craft and products prepared by the tribal community settled in different parts of India was organised by the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manava Sangrahalaya (IGRMS) of Bhopal in association with the MGM Yakshagana Kendra.

The programme was inaugurated by Derick Swartz, Vice-Chancellor of South Africa based Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.

"India is known to be a diverse country. This is a small effort towards introducing national unity and integrity under a single roof", Ashok Vardhana, officer in-charge, IGRMS, said.
 

Various handicraft items like clay models, traditional clothes, colourful costumes made out of bamboo, sandals, handlooms, handmade bags, toys, decorative items, paintings like 'Madhubani', dye work and leather bags made by tribal people have been put up for exhibition and sale at the MGM college premises until December 14.

Dance forms of different tribal communities from the states of Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya were presented at the inaugural function.
