Official sources said that the meeting has been convened a day after the Monsoon Session of Parliament commences.

The 85-year-old Parliament House is a Grade I heritage structure, designed by Edwin Lutyens and Hervert Baker.

The Heritage Committee is Joint Committee on Maintenance of Heritage Character and Development of Parliament House Complex is headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar. It has senior Congress leader Karan Singh and BJP veteran L K Advani as its members.

Other members include Bali Ram of BSP, Rewati Raman Singh of SP and Ram Sundar Das of JD(U). The panel includes deputy chairperson of Rajya Sabha, home minister and urban development minister as ex-officio members.

While two vacancies from Rajya Sabha already exist, two more vacancies have arisen from the Lok Sabha with Pranab Mukherjee becoming President and Mamata Banerjee becoming Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The deliberations on August 9 assume significance as it is the first meeting of the Joint Committee after reports appeared on plans of setting up a new Parliament House complex.

A High Powered Committee (HPC) is being set up to suggest an alternative complex to house the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha amidst apprehensions over the structural stability of the building built in 1927.

The issue of the site, size and the structure of the alternative complex would be decided by the HPC which will soon be set up by Speaker Meira Kumar.

The move is being thought of at a time when severe wear and tear as also a spate of changes and encroachments in the original design has endangered the structural stability of the heritage building.
