Heroin worth Rs 58 crore recovered in Poonch, 2 held

Police have seized over 56 kgs of heroin worth Rs 58 crore and arrested two narcotics smugglers, including a former police constable, in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Acting on a tip off, police intercepted a Tata Mobile vehicle at Kalai Bridge outskirts of Poonch town last night, a senior police officer said today.

During the search of the vehicle, police recovered 45 packets of high quality heroin weighing over 56 kgs, he said, adding, the value of the contraband in the international market is over Rs 58 crores.

In connection with the case, two smugglers- Mohammad Rafiq and driver Shakeel Ahmed- were arrested, he said adding Rafiq was a dismissed police constable and a former Special Police Officer (SPO).
 

A case has been registered and an investigation underway, he added.
