High Court notice to govt on illegal kidney trade in Cuttack

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports of illegal business in body organs, the Orissa High Court today issued notice to the state government asking it to file details about the alleged removal of a kidney of a poor woman here in exchange for money.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A K Goel and Justice A K Rath asked the state to file details in an affidavit stating about the action taken by the government on the matter.

Meanwhile, the woman Padmini Nayak claimed that she was promised Rs 3.5 lakh but was duped by a middlemen and the recipient and paid only Rs 50,000.
 

Padmini also alleged that all relevant documents, including the income and residence certificates of her husband required for legal organ donation were procured by the middlemen.
