The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has received the highest number of complaints of atrocities against Scheduled Caste people from Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu till October this year, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Replying to a question, Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla said the Commission received 2493 complaints from Uttar Pradesh and disposed off over 1500 this year.

As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, 2078 complaints were received, of which 1558 were disposed off.

The least number of complaints were reported from Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern states besides a few union territories.

Sampla said the rules and procedures of the NCSC do not prescribe any time limit for investigation and enquiry of complaints received in the Commission. The Commission has all the powers of civil court trying a suit, he said.

However, the disposal of the complaints depends on the nature and gravity of the complaints and also on the response from the concerned public authorities, he added.

The Minister also said that a total of 12,566 complaints were pending with the Commission till October 2014.
