Hike in tariff among suggested measures to manage groundwater,

Organisations including the World Bank and the Second Administrative Reform Commission have suggested measures like increasing water tariffs in urban areas for sustainable development and management of groundwater in the country, the Parliament was informed today.

Several organisations in their reports have mentioned about groundwater related issues and challenges and suggested various measures to tackle it, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat said in a reply in Lok Sabha.

"Optimum crop water requirements, reducing evapo- transpiration from fields in agricultural settings, conjunctive use of surface and groundwater in specific areas, groundwater recharge enhancement to manage over-exploitation of groundwater etc., which inter-alia, include measures to be taken for sustainable development and management of groundwater in the country," he said.
