Congress leader Hilal Ahmad Shah today became the first candidate to file his nomination papers for the by-elections in south Kashmir's Anantnag Assembly constituency scheduled to be held on June 19.

"On 4th day after the issuance of Election Notification for conduct of by-elections to Anantnag Assembly constituency, first nomination was filed in the office of Returning Officer today.

"Hilal Ahmad Shah of Congress deposited his nomination papers before the concerned Returning officer for Anantnag Assembly constituency," an official spokesman said.

The by-poll in the constituency was necessitated after the death of PDP patron and the former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Sayeed's daughter Mehbooba Mufti, who is representing Anantnag parliamentary constituency, took over as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir last month and is expected to seek her election to the Assembly from the constituency.

Meanwhile, an election Control Room was set up today in office of Deputy Commissioner Anantnag, to look into the matters pertaining to the upcoming bye-elections.

A toll-free number has also been established in the Control Room to receive queries from concerned quarters, the spokesman said.
