Emmy Award-winning writer Steven Bochco, known for creating series such as "Hill Street Blues" and "Doogie Howser, MD", died at the age of 74.
A family spokesperson for the scribe-producer said he died after a battle with cancer, Variety reported.
Bochco, who has 10 Emmy awards to his credit, created several hit television shows including "LA Law" and "NYPD Blue".
The son of a painter and a concert violinist, Bochco grew up in Manhattan.
He attended NYU, followed by Carnegie Institute of Technology, receiving a degree in theatre and went to Los Angeles there after.
He, then, wrote for several series at Universal Studios. In 1972, he got his big break when he wrote the screenplay for the sci-fi film "Silent Running". He also wrote "The Movie Maker" after which he turned towards the small screen.
Bochco had said that the disrespect he confronted as the writer discouraged him to write for the celluloid.
At 22, he served as a story editor on popular NBC drama, "The Name of the Game" till "Murder in the First", which aired on TNT for two years till 2016.
Bochco, credited for revolutionising modern TV, the writer-producer's shows pressed the norms by creating content that was acceptable in that era.
He also made a musical such as "Cop Rock" for ABC.
He was honoured with David Susskind lifetime achievement award in 1999 by the Producers Guild of America.
Bochco produced legal drama "Raising the Bar" for TNT that ran for two seasons in 2008 and 2009.
He also self-published memoir titled, "Truth Is a Total Defense: My Fifty Years in Television" on his journey in TV in the year 2016.
"Bay City Blues" and "Cop Rock" are among some of Bochco's flops.
He is survived by his third wife Dayna Kalins, along with children Melissa Bochco, Jesse Bochco and Sean Flanagan, and two grandchildren.
