"We have heard about your lifelong struggle. I was keen to meet you in New York. It was not possible there. However, we have come to you to see you. It is a delight to be here," Banerjee quoted Clinton after a meeting at the state secretariat.

Clinton, she said, had been keen to meet her in New York during the annual programme of the Time magazine. The chief minister had not attended the programme.

Banerjee said, "I told her that I visited New York in 1999 as a member of an Indian delegation".
