Meetu Singh, boxing coach at a village school, was arrested when he came to G.T. Karnal by-pass with the leopard skin.

Police action came on a tip-off that Singh, part of a gang of poachers that only traps and kills leopards, would cross the area.

"Three pieces of leopard skin were recovered from his possession. They were well preserved and are likely to fetch a high price in the market. A case under the Wildlife Act has been registered", Ashok Chand, Additional Commissioner of Police, Crime, said.

Chand said during investigation, it was revealed that Singh and his associates had been involved in trapping leopards for their skin for the past five years.

"They hunted leopards in the forests of Shivalik Range in Himachal Pradesh. They identified the waterholes frequently visited by the leopards. Once the leopard was caught, the poachers beat the animal to death", he said.

Singh said that he and his associates so far have hunted and killed more than 10 leopards. They have sold the big cat's skin in Shimla, Macleodganj and Dharamshala of Himachal Pradesh, Chand said.
