Himachal Governor Acharya Devvrat today paid a surprise visit to the HP University hostel here and expressed concern over the lack of cleanliness and poor maintenance.

The governor visited Tagore, Dr Y S Parmar and Shahid Bhagat Singh hostels and inspected rooms, toilets, dining halls and kitchens, officials said.

He also interacted with students, who expressed concern over the unhygienic conditions, they added.

He directed the officiating Vice Chancellor Prof Rajender Chauhan to ensurecleanliness.

He said that the hostels lacked basic facilities and it seemed that no responsible officer visited them.

He advised the vice chancellor that mere sending of estimates for maintenance was not enough and that such things should be taken seriously by the administration.

It was shocking that no action was taken despite repeated complaints by students, he added. He also asked the vice chancellor to take action against the person responsible for maintenance work and ensure that the condition was improved by October 6.

The governor said he would pay surprise visits in the future also.
