Himachal Pradesh University students today threatened to launch an agitation in protest against the indifferent attitude shown by the varsity administration towrds their long-pending demands.

They also accused the Vice Chancellor of acting at the behest of the Government and not even willing to talk to them over the issue.

"We have been raising these demands for past seven months but the University is neither willing to talk to us nor accept the demand. They have left us with no option but to adopt the path of agitation," said Ranjan and Piyush Sewal, President and General Secretary of Students Central Association (SCA) of Himachal Pradesh University.

They said the university has even failed to meet their petty demands like providing hostel and library facility, recruitment to the vacant posts of teachers, beautification of the campus and "90 per cent of the grant of Rs 3.23 crore given by University Grant Commission (UGC) remained unspent."

SCA leaders said that Rs 62 lakhs were sanctioned for wi-fi, Rs 66 lakhs for campus development, Rs 80 lakhs for laboratories, Rs seven lakh for cultural activities and Rs 35 lakh for repair of library and Rs five lakh each for training of duty officers, amenities for women and publication "but works have either not been started or were incomplete," they alleged.

Even the CAG report has pointed out that the university has misused the student funds amounting to Rs 12.5 crores and diverted the fund for other activities.

The students' leaders alleged University authorities were intimidating the students and using repressive measures against them.

The SCA would start a signature campaign in support of their demands and hand it over to the VC.

"In case the authorities did not respond favourably, the last option of launching an agitation would be exercised," they cautioned.
