An inmate of the Puzhal Central Prison here was today attacked and killed by five of his fellow prisoners inside the jail complex due to suspected previous enmity, a prison official said.

The victim, a history-sheeter, was brutally attacked with a 'sharp object' when he was inside a toilet by five men and he was pronounced dead on arrival at a government hospital.

"Though the victim and the assailants were lodged in different cells, the toilet is common for all. Saran Raj, who is also a history-sheeter, led the attack and he was joined by four others," a senior prison official told PTI.

A case has been registered and a police probe is on and the jurisdictional magistrate was also holding an inquriy, he added.

On the 'sharp object' and how the assailants managed to get it inside the high security prison, he said the object was nothing but "portion of an aluminium vessel used for taking food."

"We suspect that the murder could be due to previous enmity..," he said.

The deceased and assailants were involved in many criminal cases including murder and attempt to murder charges, he added.
