A newly appointed security officer was allegedly heckled by some people before the Hindustan Motors plant at Uttarpara in Hooghly district today.

Police said the security officer Subhas Rakshit had to be taken away after some people verbally abused him.

The plant had retrenched some security personnel during its downsizing as it reopened in May after suspension of work in April 12.

Rakshit himself did not lodge any formal complaint and did not say anything to the press.

Uttarpara police station O C Arijit Dasgupta said a force went to the spot and pacified the people that had gathered. Rakshit was taken to another place.

Union sources said 37 security personnel had been sacked when the plant reopened apart from a large number of the 2,200 strong workforce.

The retrenched workers were stated to have had grievances against those having resumed services and any newcomer.
