Teachers of Hooghly Women's College here demonstrated at the college gate Tuesday alleging that some members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) had forcibly stopped the teachers from participating in the foundation day programme of the institution.

College Principal Seema Banerjee told reporters the teachers demonstrated outside the college main gate when they were forcibly prevented by some TMCP members from entering the institution and conducting its foundation day and prize distribution ceremony.

She said some outsiders, who were not students of the institute had been entering the campus and creating trouble for past several months in the name of TMCP.

Commisioner of Police, Chandernagore commisionerate, Ajay Kumar said the sit-in on the road, infront of the college, continued for about an hour and was later dispersed at the behest of police officers.

The teachers, however, said that the protest has not been withdrawn and would continue till those responsible for the trouble at the college were brought to book.

Kumar said the higher education department would be informed about today's development at the college by the district administration.

A TMCP member said some of the teachers were merely enacting a drama in the name of protest and the union had expressed its resentment to invitation cards not being sent to the general students and union members by the college principal.
