A panel of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly today directed officials to identify land for setting up of a common bio-waste treatment facility to ensure scientific disposal of hospital wastes.

The direction was issued by the Committee on Environment (EC), which met under the chairmanship of MLA M Y Tarigami here, a spokesman said here.

Taking serious note of the delay in acquiring land, Tarigami directed the Secretary (Health) and Medical Education Department to coordinate with State Pollution Control Board and the Revenue authorities and Deputy Commissioners concerned to identify suitable sites and furnish a detailed report in this regard to the committee.

During the meeting, it was informed that a proposal had been received from a US-based firm for disposing all kinds of wastes generated in hospitals using a technology approved by the Central Pollution Control Board, the spokesman said.

Causes of water pollution, particularly in major urban centres of the state, also figured in the meeting.

The committee asked officials to take steps to prevent polluted water from flowing into water bodies.
