Houses on 'encroached' govt land demolished

Amid high drama by protesters, about 40 houses constructed on alleged encroached land notified for a police training school at Kullaveerampaty were demolished today with police protection.

Police said they foiled an attempt by six women residents of the area to commmit self-immolation and arrested 16 persons.

The state government had notified the area in Kullaveerampatty for setting up police trainning school. However, more than forty people encroched the land and constructed pakka houses.

When officials arrived in the area to remove the encroachments, the residents protested.

After clearing them, police used earth movers to demolish the houses.
