Suspected members of the Manipur- based Hmar People's Convention (Democrats) fired at a police outpost in Khawlian along the Mizoram-Manipur border last night.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, LT Hrangchal, said the militants fired several rounds at the police outpost and fled as the policemen retaliated.

There was no casualty or injuries as a result of the firing, which lasted for about 10 minutes, said Hrangchal.

"We had prior information that HPC(D) militants were coming to Khawlian village to create trouble and had instructed the police there to beef up security and intensify patrolling," he said.

The enhanced security foiled the ploy of the insurgents and, apparently in frustration, they fired upon the police post from a distance, he added.

A platoon of the second India Reserve Battalion has now been deployed at the outpost.
