The Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board (HSAMB) has decided to rope in engineering students to assess the quality of construction materials being used in various development works undertaken by it in the state.

The work of sample collection will begin on July 1, a release quoting a senior official said.

Under this initiative, the Board has tied up with the Jai Parkash Mukand Lal Innovative Engineering and Technology Institute (JMIETI), Kurukshetra.

Teachers and students of the JMIETI will jointly collect samples from work sites. They would get the samples tested at a laboratory and send the findings to the state government, HSAMB, Chief Administrator, Mandeep Singh Brar, said.

Since the JMIETI would do this work free of cost, it would reduce the expenses incurred by the Board on getting sampling works done by outside agencies, he said.

Brar said on the examination of samples, the quality of materials used for construction would be known.

The sampling work would be done in the presence of a junior engineer, senior engineer and sub-divisional officer of the department, and for transparency, video-graphy would be done, he said.

Even if a junior engineer, senior engineer and sub-divisional officer are not present at the spot, they would be held responsible for the results, he said.

Brar said no officer or official of the department would establish any contact or try to influence the teachers and students of JMIETI.

Strict action would be taken against the officer or official trying to influence or hamper the sampling work, he said, according to the release.

Development works worth about Rs 610 crore of the marketing board are under progress. No negligence would be tolerated in the examination of these works, he said.

"With this initiative, the students would do practical work besides academics. For practical work, the students would be also given marks.

"Students who find more flaws would be honoured. Thus, they would be able to make positive contribution to the country," he said, according to the release. PTI SUN.
