Huge cache of arms, ammunition seized in Assam

A huge cache of arms and ammunition were recovered from a vehicle and two persons arrested in this connection in Assam's Chirang district this evening.

During a search operation at Chapaguri under Dhaligaon police station, police searched a vehicle bearing West Bengal registration number plate traveling from Nagaland to Darjeeling, IGP L R Bishnoi told PTI.

An M-16 rifle, two Beretta pistols, three .32 pistols, 300 ammunition of 9 mm pistol, 80 rounds of AK series assault rifles, 198 rounds of M-16 and 60 rounds of .32 pistol were recovered from the vehicle, Bishnoi said.

The two persons in the car were arrested and they were identified as Umesh Kami of Darjeeling and Ganesh Chetri of Baksa district in Assam, he said.
 

The two claimed before the police that NSCN had helped in giving them the firearms meant for a Nepali outfit in Darjeeling, the IGP said.
