A huge cache of explosives, including 5,000 electric detonators, were seized and three persons were arrested from Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district, police said today.

Police seized 1,249 gelatin sticks, 500 kg ammonium nitrate and 370 metre fuse wire besides the 5,000 detonators, from Bethamcherla and Kurnool town, they said.

"Based on a tip-off, police intercepted a four-wheeler late last night and found some explosives being illegally transported by three persons, identified as S Reddy, Lingaiah and Srinivasulu," a police official said.

When quizzed, the trio admitted to illegally storing explosives in Kurnool town. Based on their information, police seized the remaining explosives, Bethamcherla police station inspector Subramanyam told PTI.

"They were involved in illegal supply of explosive materials without valid licence and permission for mining and blasting purposes," he said.

A case was registered under section 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of IPC and other relevant sections of the Explosives Act, he said, adding that further probe was on.
