A huge cache of choppers and knives were confiscated from a passenger travelling in a taxi at suburban Chembur, before Maharashtra Assembly elections scheduled on October 15, police said here today.
The passenger Abdul Rahim Sayyed (32), carrying about 1,500 sharp knives and 110 choppers, was arrested under the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act yesterday, Chunabhatti police station's senior inspector Dattatray Naykodi said.
"Sayyed claimed that the consignment was meant to be delivered to a person ahead of Bakr-Eid on Monday. However, his answers were not reasonably satisfactory and he could also not reveal the name or details of the consignee," Naykodi said.

The vehicle in which Sayyed travelled was intercepted during a routine check at Priyadarshini circle last night and the cache of sharp knives was seized, Naykodi said.
"By carrying a large number of weapons, the accused has defied orders of the Mumbai Police Commissionerate which bans carrying arms before elections," Naykodi said.
