Jewellery and currency notes, worth crores, were recovered from the residence of a lower-ranked municipal enginner in Howrah district, a top district police official said today.

Personnel from Kolkata Police's Anti Corruption wing raided the house of Pranab Adhikary at Malipanchghara area in the district and stumbled on the jewellery articles and cash from the concealed wall almirah last evening, the official said.

Adhikary, who was the sub-assitant engineer of Bally Municipalty, was arrested after the recovery.

Adhikary was taken to the custody of Kolkata Police who had raided his house on their own information, the Howrah police official said.

A force from Malipanchghara police station went to the spot to cordon off the house and help the eight-member Kolkata Police team to carry on the raids.

The official said it was suspected the accused had been involved in sanctioning building plans in the fast growing Baly area, which is located very close to Howrah mega city.
