Hundreds of Israelis, most of them women, protested outside the US embassy in Tel Aviv today against President Donald Trump, mirroring worldwide demonstrations to mark his first full day in office.

The protesters waved placards reading "Hate is not great" and "Women's rights are human rights", according to an AFP journalist.

The "woman's march" demonstration was one of more than 600 being held worldwide, a day after Trump's inauguration yesterday, to condemn his allegedly sexist stances following a series of disparaging comments he made during his presidential campaign.

Hundreds of thousands packed the streets of Washington while other demonstrations took place in cities such London, Paris and Sydney against Trump's presidency.

In a break with previous administrations, Trump has pledged to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and relocate the US embassy there from Tel Aviv.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has warned that such a move would deal a huge blow to hopes for Middle East peace and the UN and EU have voiced deep concern over the proposal.
