Separatist Hurriyat Conference today asked the United Nations to intervene on the Kashmir issue by prevailing upon India to "shun violence" and initiate process for granting right to self determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

"Since we believe and understand that Kashmir dispute remains at the centre of the regional conflict, we appeal you to challenge the behaviour of Indian State in Jammu and Kashmir and urge it to stop this reign of terror.

"In the interests of regional peace and global justice we once again implore you to intervene and prevail upon the Indian state to shun violence and initiate processes for granting universally recognised Right to Self Determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir," the separatists said in a memorandum addressed to the UN.

As its proposed march to the local office of the United Nations Military Observers Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) was foiled by authorities by imposing curfew in some parts and restrictions elsewhere, the separatist camp released the memorandum to media outlets here.

Singh also welcomed the separatists' move saying, "Had they got the enlightenment earlier, the tourism sector would not have got disrupted and we could have also saved tremendous loss of lives and property in the Valley."

"But as I said, most of the Kashmir-centric politicians, they speak according to convenience and the requirement of the occasion," Singh said.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge accused the state and central governments of not taking interest in boosting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir.

"Why the tourists are not visiting Jammu and Kashmir? (It is) Because of the government's laxity. They are not taking interest. Also, the central government is also not taking proper steps to normalise the situation and Hurriyat is also part of it. Therefore they both are responsible.

"When they (separatists) are realising that people are revolting, now they are telling this thing (to visit Valley)," Kharge said.
