A young man accused of strangulating his wife was today awarded life imprisonment by a Delhi court which said the case does not fall under the "rarest of rare" category to warrant death sentence.

Additional Sessions Judge Vinay Kumar Khanna handed life term to 26-year-old Dharmender Kumar Paswan, a Bihar resident, who was convicted for murder and destroying the evidence after the crime.

"Considering the totality of facts and circumstances, this court is of the opinion that it is not a case for imposition of death penalty as it does not qualify as a rarest of rare case. Having decided that, this court is left with no discretion but to award him life sentence," the court said and also imposed a cost of Rs 20,000 on the convict.

As per the prosecution, Dharmender killed his wife in August, 2010, suspecting her of having an affair with someone else and dumped her body into a gutter near his house in south Delhi.
