The husband of a village head was seriously injured when three persons fired at him near Khanpur Tiraha here today, police said.

Mohan Singh (47), husband of Rama Devi, the Nagla Loka village head, was returning home, after withdrawing money from a bank in nearby Karab village when the incident took place, SP Rural Arun Kumar Singh said.

"A bullock cart going ahead of the car in which Singh was travelling did not give way to the car forcing it to slow down. At that time the three persons came out of hiding from a nearby field, shot at him and fled," the police officer said.

The bullock cart driver has been taken into custody and a hunt is on to nab the three assailants, police said.

"Singh has been admitted to a hospital and is in a serious condition," the SP said.
