The Bhagyanagar Municipal GHMC Employees Union today called off its strike over salary hike demand, following a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Somesh Kumar, civic officials said.

Hundreds of employees affiliated to the union had gone on strike from Wednesday midnight, refusing to ply the garbage transport trucks.

Hyderabad generates over 3,600 metric tonnes of garbage every day, and the quantity goes up during the festive season. The strike led to garbage piling up in several places.

Kumar had said yesterday that the pay had been increased from Rs 6,700 to Rs 8,500 for outsourced sweepers and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) had written to the state (Telangana) government for increasing the salaries of other outsourced employees.
