A Traffic Police Inspector was today suspended on corruption charges after he allegedly took Rs 25 lakh from a rice merchant for not informing the I-T department about Rs 1.25 crore he was carrying.

The Inspector, Khaja Moinuddin, attached to L B Nagar Traffic Police Station, later returned the amount to the merchant.

Moinuddin was suspended by Rachakonda Commissioner of Police Mahesh Muralidhar Bhagwat after he allegedly took Rs 25 lakh from the rice trader, according to an official release.

On October 28, a team of L B Nagar Traffic Police stopped the vehicle of the merchant, in which he was carrying Rs 1.25 crore for his business.

Sub-Inspector G Nagraju, Constable Satyanarayna and Home Guard Jangaiah, who stopped the vehicle, informed the matter to Moinuddin.

Moinuddin allegedly demanded Rs 50 lakh from the rice merchant for not informing about the cash to I-T Department. He later settled for Rs 25 lakh and took the amount, the release said

Later, the rice merchant complained to senior police officials and an enquiry was ordered. However, on November 29, the Traffic Inspector returned Rs 25 lakh to the rice merchant.

"For misusing official position and indulging in corrupt practices, the CP Rachakonda issued suspension order of Traffic Inspector L B Nagar Khaja Moinuddin," it said.

Also, memos were issued to Sub-Inspector Nagraju and Constable Satyanarayna, and show cause notice served to Home Guard Jangaiah for not informing the matter to superior officers, the release added.
