Hydro power generation in the country during 2015-16 stood at 121.34 billion units (BU) as against the target of 128 BU due to lesser rainfall in some regions, Parliament was informed today.

"Production of hydroelectric power generation in the country for 2015-16 was lower at 121.34 BU against the target of 128 BU mainly due to lesser rainfall experienced in some regions of the country," Power Minister Piyush Goyal said in written reply to Lok Sabha.

The minister said the generation from hydro power stations depends on the inflow due to rainfall in the catchment area, snow-melt (Himalayan Rivers) and the available storages.

"The generation will be generally less if there is shortfall in rainfall in catchment area. Any shortage in hydro power generation is tackled on the basis of increased generation from other sources, depending on transmission availability," he added.

According to the statement, Telangana was the worst performer as it met only 7.78 per cent of the generation target followed by Jharkhand (44.32%), Karnataka (57.91%), Andhra Pradesh (61.35%0 and Gujarat (67.32%).

The best performer was Rajasthan as it produced 147.69 per cent of targeted electricity generation followed by Chhattisgarh (129.31%) and Himachal Pradesh (119.21%).
