The 24-year-old said he has turned down several roles because he wants to have a long career, rather than make easy choices and keep his teenage fan base, reported Contactmusic.

"There were several avenues I could have gone down after 'High School Musical', but I looked at the long term. It was not so much about keeping the fans but about making sure I was able to focus on my craft and really take a step back, work hard, work with great directors and have a graceful transition.

"I did not cash in or take the easier route but really focused on learning as I grow. I am still learning. I am just very lucky," he said.

Efron, who is starring opposite Taylor Schilling in the new release "The Lucky One", was pleased to work with the actress.

"I am happy I was in a film with her so early on because she has got such a huge career ahead of her. I am just blown away. She reminds me of, Meryl Streep. I am so lucky to work with her."
