Actress Margaret Cho, who joined Golden Globe awards host Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on stage to mock North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has denied allegations that the gag was racist in nature.

Cho's avatar as General Cho Young Ja at the ceremony drew some angry comments on Twitter with many viewers feeling that she was playing up to the Asian stereotype.

But the comedian said the joke should not be taken so seriously.

"I'm not playing the race card. I'm playing the rice card," Cho tweeted in response to the criticism.

"I'm of mixed North/South Korean descent - you imprison, starve and brainwash my people you get made fun of by me #hatersgonhate #FreeSpeech," Cho explained.

The bit was hosts' way to make fun of the dictator, who is said to be behind the massive hack attack on Sony Entertainment.

But Cho's fans thought otherwise as they posted their reaction.

"I've always loved margaret cho but she needs to stop shuckin' for white folk," one user wrote.
