Funnyman Russell Brand says he turned to drugs as it seemed helpful in coping up with difficulties in life.

The 38-year-old comedian, who battled heroin and alcohol addiction for several years, has been sober since 2003, reported Contactmusic.

"When I took drugs I felt lonely, alienated and disconnected. I felt that this culture isn't serving me. When I took heroin for the first time it was beautiful," Brand said at a gathering.

"It was a personal problem - I couldn't cope with being alive, I needed to take drugs." he added.
