"The move to put up the MiG-27ML fighter aircraft at the entrance of the Advance Landing Ground in Upper Shillong has been done to attract more tourists," an Eastern Air Command official said today.
Inducted into service in the 80s, the aircraft has flown nearly 2,000 hours and was part of the Kargil operations in 1999, he said.
The command headquarter has also put on display several other IAF aircraft at the entrance to its complex. These include the Hawker Hunter, Caribou, Iskra trainer aircraft and Mi-4 helicopter.
The officials said a few other aircraft including DHC-3 Otter and HAL-built HJT-16, better known as Kiran aircraft, are in the pipeline for display.
