IAS officer C Umashankar has landed in a controversy with the Hindu Desiya Congress (HDC) filing a plea in the High Court bench here seeking a direction to police to register a criminal case against him for making a statement that would hurt religious sentiments of communities.

P Madusudhana Perumal, HDC President alleged that the IAS officer in an interview to a Tamil Magazine on July 13 had stated that he got prophetic vision that those who indulged in idol worship would be punished.

The petitioner said he had moved the court as police did not register cases under various IPC sections including 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes).
