Idina Menzel to star in 'Beaches' remake

Lifetime is remaking beloved '80s series TV movie "Beaches" with Idina Menzel in the lead role.

The movie will feature new versions of the classic songs "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "The Glory of Love," and include several other songs recorded specifically for the movie, reported Variety.

Production on the tele film is set to begin on August 15 in Vancouver.

Bette Midler originated the role of CC in the 1998 film, opposite Barbara Hershey as Hillary. The original film was directed by Garry Marshall, who died on July 19 at age 81.

The new iteration of "Beaches" is executive produced by Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan.
 

Allison Anders will direct it from a script by Bart Barker and Nikole Beckwith. The movie is produced by A+E Studios and will premiere on Lifetime in 2017.
